These innovations suggest that the future of retail could lean towards using non-human figures to circumvent the fear of AI replacing human jobs.

The backbone of the tradeshow seemed to be the integration of AI throughout the retail process. This includes everything from product design, discovery, customer service, to the final purchase and checkout stages. AI’s role in retail isn’t just about flashy gadgets; it’s increasingly about sophisticated data analysis aimed at understanding and predicting consumer behavior more accurately. For instance, Google’s announcement of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and its integration into Google’s AI Mode indicates a move towards making online shopping seamless — where AI functions as a bridge between consumers and retailers without the need to visit actual retailer websites.

Further demonstrating AI’s integration into everyday retail scenarios, companies like Papa Johns are employing AI to enhance customer interaction, using chatbots that can recall previous orders, recommend items based on user preferences, and apply relevant discounts—all aimed at simplifying and personalizing the ordering process.

However, this relentless push towards AI integration brings with it significant concerns, particularly around privacy and the gradual erosion of human elements in consumer interactions. For example, a South Korean startup, SpaceVision, introduced technology that allows retailers to monitor customers’ movements and interactions in stores with unsettling precision, reminiscent of online tracking mechanisms. Such technologies may soon enable retailers to trigger specific advertising behaviors based on the detailed tracking of customer actions and profiles.

In sharp contrast to these high-tech approaches was a more grounded presentation by a company called Equapack. They showcased retailer packaging solutions that prioritize human sensory experiences and environmental concerns, such as reusability and aesthetics. The founder emphasized the value of actual human interaction in the design process, resisting the push towards digitizing every aspect of their operations.

Throughout the trade show, it became evident that while AI offers scale and efficiency gains, it also poses fundamental questions about its necessity and impact on the consumer experience. The tech industry’s tendency to prioritize AI for its own sake—to “scale” and capture more data—might overlook what consumers genuinely value: simplicity, privacy, and human touch.

The retail landscape is undeniably transforming under the influence of AI, with every corner of the consumer experience now fair game for high-tech enhancements. Yet, as Mia Sato’s observations from the NRF trade show suggest, the most memorable and impactful consumer interactions may still be those that preserve a sense of human connection and tactile satisfaction—values that an AI-driven approach often struggles to replicate.
