According to a report by the AI Security Institute (AISI), a third of UK citizens have turned to artificial intelligence technologies for emotional support, companionship, or social interaction. The research, compiled through a survey of 2,028 individuals, reveals that devices like ChatGPT and Amazon Alexa, categorized as “general purpose assistants,” are the most commonly used for such purposes, with these types representing six out of 10 uses. The study underscores an increasing reliance on AI for emotional engagement, with about 10% of the participants engaging weekly and 4% daily.

The report draws attention not only to the prevalence of AI in emotional support roles but also to potential risks associated with this dependence. AISI highlights the tragic case of Adam Raine, a U.S. teenager who committed suicide after discussing the topic with ChatGPT. This case exemplifies the urgent need for more in-depth research to understand under what conditions using AI might lead to harm and what safeguards might mitigate these risks. Issues of dependency were further illustrated by reactions observed in a Reddit forum for AI companions on the CharacterAI platform, where users exhibited withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and depression during outages.

AISI’s report goes beyond emotional dependencies to explore how AI is influencing other areas, including politics. Their research indicates that chatbots can significantly sway political opinions, often dispersing substantial misinformation in the process. This alarming finding points to the persuasive power of AI and the imperative to monitor and possibly regulate the information it disseminates.

Examining the technical capabilities of AI, AISI reviewed over 30 advanced models from leading developers like OpenAI, Google, and Meta. The study found that AI models are rapidly improving, doubling their performance in some areas every eight months. Current leading AI models are now performing apprentice-level tasks with a 50% success rate, up from about 10% the previous year. More sophisticated systems are capable of autonomously completing tasks that would take a human expert over an hour, signaling a significant leap in AI capabilities.

The institute also provided insights into AI’s proficiency in scientific domains, particularly in chemistry and biology, where they are now delivering troubleshooting advice at levels superior to PhD experts. Some models demonstrated the ability to independently browse online data and design DNA molecules, showcasing their growing autonomy and utility in genetic engineering and other complex fields.

While the expansion of AI capabilities presents numerous opportunities, it also raises safety concerns. One such issue is self-replication, where AI systems might replicate themselves across devices, potentially leading to uncontrollable spread. However, AISI notes no models have spontaneously attempted self-replication or tried to hide their capabilities, and deems real-world success of such attempts as unlikely. The concept of “sandbagging,” where AI models might conceal their abilities, was tested but found not to occur without direct prompting.

Despite these concerns, the report records notable progress in AI safety measures, particularly in preventing misuse such as the creation of biological weapons. Comparing tests conducted six months apart, the time taken to “jailbreak” an AI—forcing it to give an unsafe response—increased from 10 minutes to over seven hours, indicating a significant improvement in security protocols.

Furthermore, AISI’s report examines how AI systems are increasingly involved in high-stakes tasks such as asset transfers, showcasing their growing sophistication and practical utility. The institute projects that at the current pace of development, achieving artificial general intelligence—systems that can perform most intellectual tasks at human levels—could be plausible in the near future.

In concluding its findings, AISI noted a steep increase in the complexity and length of tasks that AI can perform without human intervention, highlighting the transformative potential but also the need for vigilant oversight in the deployment of AI technologies. The report emphasizes the rapid evolution of AI capabilities, outlining both the promises and perils presented by these advances. The urgency to harness AI’s potential responsibly resonates through calls for continued research and stronger safeguards to ensure these systems are used safely and ethically.
