Tinder and Zoom have introduced a cutting-edge eye-scanning technology to enable users to verify their humanity in response to increasing concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) simulations and impersonations. Both platforms, along with other major services, will offer users the option to scan their irises to obtain a “proof of humanity” badge. This development was unveiled during a live event in San Francisco hosted by the World network, a startup co-founded and chaired by Sam Altman, also known for his association with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI.
This verification mechanism operates through an online application or an orb-shaped scanning device provided by World, previously known as Worldcoin and later World Network. The process confirms a user’s human status by scanning their irises, which are believed to be even more unique identifiers than fingerprints. Successful verification results in a unique World ID assigned to each user, stored on their mobile devices as a digital credential.
World ID, which is touted as a privacy-conscious solution that does not require personal information like names or addresses, has already verified 18 million people. Users have utilized these identifications over 450 million times for various purposes. This technology is particularly relevant as online platforms experience mounting issues with fake profiles and bots, which utilize artificial intelligence to convincingly mimic human behaviors. These profiles are often employed to deceive real users through scams, including romance scams that the Federal Trade Commission reports have cost Americans over $1 billion in one year alone.
Tinder, a well-known dating app besieged by issues of bot-filled profiles and scam operations, had previously required video self-portraits from its users for verification. This integration with World ID represents a further step, allowing users to strengthen the authenticity of their profiles. Zoom, which has become an essential tool for remote communication, particularly in professional settings, also benefits from this technology by giving meeting participants a reliable method to verify their identities. This is increasingly vital due to the rising sophistication of deepfake technologies, which can create highly convincing fake videos of known figures, as evidenced by an incident where an employee was duped into transferring $25 million due to a scam involving deepfake impersonations of company executives.
The deployment of iris scanning technology is a strategic shift towards enhancing cybersecurity and user safety, aligning with broader technological trends towards secure, verifiable digital identities to counterbalance the growing capabilities of AI-driven fraud and fake content online.
