James and Owen, two of the 41 students participating in a government-funded apprenticeship program aimed at training them for careers in cybersecurity or software engineering, voiced their frustrations about discovering that much of the course content, including slides and voiceovers, was generated by artificial intelligence. The AI’s involvement became particularly conspicuous due to inconsistencies in the material such as sudden changes in the voiceover’s accent and the presence of American English phrases minimally edited to British English. Other signs included peculiar file names and content that sometimes inappropriately referred to US legislation, all of which suggested automation in content creation.
The revelation led to multiple confrontations with the university staff, during which the students were informed that educators were permitted to use a variety of tools in their teaching. The university defended this practice in a policy statement uploaded to the course website, which outlined a framework for using AI automation in scholarly activities. Despite these reassurances, students remained skeptical and felt that the educational experience failed to meet their expectations.
The use of AI in education is growing, with a Department of Education policy paper praising its potential to transform learning experiences. A survey from educational technology firm Jisc indicated that nearly a quarter of higher education staff were incorporating AI tools into their teaching. Nonetheless, students have been largely critical of this trend.
